Beltane

Beltane falls on May 1st, about halfway between the spring equinox and summer solstice, and it marks the beginning of summer. It is one of the four Celtic “Fire Festivals”; the other three being Imbolc, Lughnasa, and Samhain.

It is also known by the names Bealtaine, La Beltain, May Eve, May Day, Galan-Mai, Valpurgis, and Cetshamain. The Beltane bonfire rituals are symbolic of the sun’s fire and heat, and is believed to originate from the worship of the sun god Belenus – where the festival gets its name from.

Beltane is a time of fertility, harvest, and sexuality, with the Maypole as a phallic symbol of male virility being a common feature of the day’s celebrations. It is also an auspicious day for handfasting and making commitments, and celebrating the union between lovers. Many young adults who start the day as virgins are often rumored to have lost their virginity before the Beltane celebrations are over.

Rituals

If you would like to observe Beltane with a ritual, here are a few simple ones you can perform:

  • The most obvious and fun ritual would be to set up a Maypole and have some friends over to dance with you beneath it.
  • You can also braid your hair today as a symbolic ritual of the union between the god and goddess.
  • Gather dew from flowers and plants on the morning of May 1, and anoint your face and body with it. The morning dew on May 1 is believed to have special powers that will increase a person’s physical attractiveness.
  • Cast a simple love spell today to attract yourself a lover.
  • Build a bonfire (please adhere to fire safety rules in your area) and bask in its warmth.
  • Decorate your doorways and windows with yellow flowers such as hawthorn, primrose, marigolds, and of course, sunflowers.
  • And finally, perform a divination ritual with this Beltane Tarot Spread below.
